Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas created from natural deposits of uranium and radium in the soil. Radon gas can be drawn into a building and can accumulate to concentrations that can increase the potential for contracting lung cancer.
The major source of radon in Colorado comes from the natural deposits of uranium found in Colorado geology.
Once created in the underlying soil or geology, radon gas is easily drawn into a home, school or building through its foundation. Radon then decays into a series of solid particles known as radon decay products. The solid decay products of radon are radioactive and can release alpha radiation while in your lungs.
Radon gas is regarded as a Group A carcinogen, that is known to increase the possibility of lung cancer in humans with prolonged exposure.
Surveys conducted by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment indicate that 4 out of 10 home shave the potential for having radon concentrations in excess of the EPA guidelines of 4.0 pCi/L.
Radon levels can vary from house to house, both old and new building and homes can have high levels of radon. All types of foundations, including crawlspaces and slab-on-grade basements are recommended to be tested.
You do not need to have a basement to have an issue with radon.
